The truth about Adderall, and why those suffering from ADHD are not absolutely "Lucky"By: As we twist through years of higher education, one thing becomes increasingly evident: the university is probably the strangest time period of our lives. It's a time when having hands with someone can mean legitimately more than sleeping with him. It's a time when even though the days seem endless, we also get too fast and they make us say, "Seriously, where the hell was that year?" It's a time when we spend half of our days sleeping up to 2 p.m. and the other half pulling all the men at night in preparation for seemingly impossible exams. It is also a time when those who suffer from ADHD are considered "lucky" to have a legitimate diagnosis, and then a prescription for a medicine that makes those who all night are much more achievable. Before my doctor dropped the bomb and realized how fucked up my brain is, I totally agreed. I thought Adderall was a gift from God, presented in the form of a small blue pill that basically made most university students feel like Bradley Cooper in "Numbers." I think it's time to clear the record. Adderall is not fun, and it's not ADHD either. Sure, I can legally take Adderall and make a night out of trouble. You know what else I can do? I can lose something in my hand five seconds ago. I can't answer every text I didn't respond immediately, because I can and will definitely forget it. I can lose all the important details in the outline that my teacher explained to me. I can impulsively commit to something before I have legitimately thought about it. I can go crazy in class, because for me, sitting still for an hour is nothing but torture. When people learn I'm diagnosed, they often express what "lucky" I am to have an excuse for Adderall. It's frustrating, but I don't necessarily blame them. This is because people who think I am #bensed only know the disadvantages of Adderall without knowing the disadvantages of ADHD. It's easy to take Adderall every time in a while, make a ton of shit, and then think that those who are always on the drug are constantly feeling the luxury you felt a particularly overwhelming Sunday night. However, constantly relying on drugs is a very different story. There are some things that people don't realize about people who suffer from ADHD.1. If you don't have ADHD, you're very lucky. Normal people have a mental filter that removes most of the irrelevant trash that is in their minds. This filter works in a way that gets rid of useless trash before you're able to know it's there. This basically ensures that you are alert to the task by hand, and able to do so without any mental interruption. Go, Glen Coco.2. Contrary to popular belief, people with ADHD are not lucky. We don't have that little nifty filter. This means that any random thought that can interrupt us will. It doesn't matter time, place or task. We will be distracted, because our brain has no way of blocking useless thoughts. Each moment is passed by examining each thought, and, if we have enough experience to deal with these distractions, deciding whether it is useful and relevant to the current situation. It is exhausting, it is frustrating, and above all, it is really, very upset.3. That's why we need Adderall. For us, Adderall takes a look at life with a more selective brain. It helps us feel close to normal, if only for a short time. We are able to ignore trivial distractions and focus more than we could without it. We don't have the luxury of taking it alone in homeless nights. We have to take it every day, whether or not we like it, because without it, we cannot focus.4. Adderall doesn't work the same way for us as for normal people. Normal people take this magic pill and suddenly they are able to focus for hours. It's not that easy for us. When we take it, we still have to work ridiculously hard with our willpower and our behavioral skills. Adderall gives us focus, but that doesn't mean he tells us what to focus on. When we take it, we have to constantly do a specific task so we don't spend three hours reorganizing our room instead of twisting for that huge exam tomorrow.5. The routine of taking Adderall has some quite significant drawbacks. Adderall is a medication, and all the medication has negative side effects. The ironic is that many of the times, those who join in Adderall without a prescription do it specifically for these drawbacks. People with ADHD know that these effects are not desirable in the long term, and they work tirelessly to defeat the results others are looking for. Believe it or not, we do not like to constantly feel tense and distant. It's not fun to hear our friends repeatedly ask if we're angry or upset because we're always so serious. Those of us who rely on a routine dose of Adderall know the struggle to lie in bed for hours, fighting to sleep. Although our bodies are exhausted, our brain is very awake. There is a disconnection between our bodies and our minds, and they are seldom synchronized to understand each other. This also explains why we can listen to our grunting stomachs, but not feel any desire to eat really anything. Forcing to eat to avoid the concern of your doctors, colleagues and family is not fun. I don't touch college students for taking Adderall to do shit when they're stressed or they're too worked. We've all had nights that make us want to jump through the nearest window and abandon all hopes of graduating college. Adderall is not the problem. The problem is that, similar to most mental disorders, ADHD is accompanied by a stigma. This stigma should consider us slightly weakened from others. Instead, he says that we are lucky to suffer a disorder that harms our daily functioning, because it gives us access to a pill that some boldly refer to as "illegal cocaine." Although university life fosters a stigma that considers us fortunate, anyone who suffers from ADHD, myself included, will tell you that this is not absolutely the case. .Lucky Jo is much less medicated than his mother and sister, and he tends to think that's a good thing. Despite his inclination to attend art school, he ended up at the University of Missouri, a decision that only regrets the days of the game in the fall when the campus is overwhelmed with SEC football fans.
